Ethereum layer 2 Starknet token holders have started voting on whether to review a plan to convert Starknet into an independent layer 1 blockchain to prepare for quantum computing threats, The Block reported on Oct. 15.

The vote will run for 7 days, the report said. As of the Snapshot tally, 177.6 million STRK tokens took part and 99.91 percent supported it. Even if it ends in approval, the network would not shift immediately.

Developer StarkWare plans to begin related research and proceed with a detailed proposal and additional votes. If it ends in rejection, Starknet will continue quantum-response work under its existing layer 2 system.

StarkWare first outlined the idea of shifting to layer 1 in early October. It cited as justification for reviewing a shift that Starknet depends on Ethereum and its security depends on how quickly Ethereum prepares for quantum and AI threats.

StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson (엘리 벤사손) said, "For blockchains to prepare for these threats, they need the right cryptographic technology and the ability to upgrade it," adding, "Starknet also needs to shift to L1 for this."
