[DigitalToday reporter Hyunwoo Choo (추현우)] Routers that no longer receive manufacturer firmware updates can still be used for internet connectivity if there is no hardware problem. But it becomes harder to block newly discovered security vulnerabilities in time, making checks and replacement preparation necessary. It is an Engadget report dated Sept. 29 (local time).

A router does not stop working immediately when manufacturer support ends. There is no separate shutdown mechanism, so it can be used until the hardware fails. The issue is security. When firmware updates stop, the most reliable way to fix newly identified security flaws disappears.

Hacking damage does not occur immediately after support ends. But a vulnerable state can persist for a long time. Attackers may target such routers in large numbers to relay malicious traffic, or enlist them into groups of infected devices without the user knowing.

Users should reduce exposure until they replace the device. It is better to turn off remote management so the router's admin page cannot be opened from networks outside the home. It is also better to change the administrator password in the current settings to a strong, unique value.

To check support status, users should first confirm the model name and hardware revision. This information is usually on a label on the bottom or back of the router. Even with the same model name, different hardware revisions can have different firmware. Users can check the installed firmware version in the admin page or a dedicated app, and turn on automatic updates if the feature is available.

Users should then check the latest version for the same model and revision on the manufacturer's official support site. They should compare it with the installed version and review release notes and notices on end of support or end of product life. If an update is available, they should install it following the manufacturer's guidance. If there is no update, they should confirm the support status again, and if the end of support is near or has already passed, it is better to apply the latest version and then prepare to replace the device.

Some users may choose alternative firmware such as OpenWrt. But they should first confirm the exact hardware revision in the list of supported devices. Installing the wrong firmware or making mistakes in the procedure can make the router unusable.
