Tesla's driver-assistance software Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised will soon be available in the Czech Republic.

On Sept. 21, IT outlet Engadget reported that Tesla plans to start offering FSD Supervised to local residents after receiving temporary approval from Czech authorities.

With the approval, the Czech Republic became the seventh country in Europe to allow FSD Supervised. Tesla's official Europe account on X, formerly Twitter, said it will launch the service for Czech residents soon. In Europe, the Netherlands was the first to start the approval process, followed by Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium and Slovenia.

Czech transport authorities said they based the decision on a temporary approval issued in April by the Netherlands' vehicle regulator RDW. Czech authorities said that during the initial review they were concerned about how FSD Supervised responds to traffic lights and speed limits, and whether drivers remain attentive and ready to take over control immediately.

The Czech Republic then conducted an evaluation over several months and reviewed the experience of other countries where FSD Supervised is already in operation. It decided to allow use of the software on its roads. As it is a temporary approval, drivers using FSD Supervised must continue to monitor the road and the system and intervene immediately if necessary.

The Czech approval is expected to accelerate Tesla's expansion of FSD Supervised in Europe. Expansion into major European markets is still under way. France is currently conducting tests of FSD Supervised, and Tesla is focusing on widening approvals to larger European countries.

Tesla's ultimate goal is to expand the application of FSD Supervised across the European Union. To do so, it must secure the backing of at least 15 of the EU's 27 member states. A related vote could take place as early as October.

The Czech Republic's move is also significant because it shows other member states are making decisions based on real-world operations after the Netherlands' earlier approval. The Czech Republic also said it decided to approve the system after reviewing other countries' experience using it.

Ultimately, for FSD Supervised to spread in Europe, securing support at the EU level is important as well as individual national approvals. Tesla is increasing the number of approving countries, including the Czech Republic, but it is expected to need additional approvals in major markets, including France, to expand its scope across Europe.
