LG Electronics has expanded its data centre liquid-cooling lineup after winning Nvidia's AI factory specification approval for a 2.5-MW-class large-capacity coolant distribution unit (CDU).
LG Electronics said on Monday the 2.5-MW CDU was approved as Nvidia's "DSX Ready CDU".
DSX Ready is a certification programme for products that meet requirements related to Nvidia's "DSX AI Factory platform". For CDUs, it applies to large-capacity products of 2.3 MW or more used to build AI factories.
LG Electronics previously received Nvidia specification approvals for a 600-kW CDU in July and a 1-MW CDU in September. With the latest approval covering the 2.5-MW product, it has secured a liquid-cooling lineup ranging from small to large capacity.
The 2.5-MW CDU supports an "In-Row" configuration that cools multiple server racks grouped together.
As power density in AI servers has increased, demand is growing for large-capacity equipment that cools multiple racks at once rather than an "In-Rack" approach that installs a CDU for each individual rack. Given that the capacity of the latest AI server racks is about 120 kW, the required cooling capacity is about 2.4 to 2.5 MW when grouping 20 racks.
LG Electronics is expanding its data centre cooling business to supply not only CDUs but also chillers, computer room air handlers (CRAH) and cold plates.
The company plans to provide a total solution using a "Chip to Chiller" approach that connects cold plates that directly cool heat generated from AI chips to CDUs that distribute coolant and chillers that produce coolant.
LG Electronics plans to use the latest approval to expand supply of cooling solutions to global big tech companies and AI data centre operators.
Jae-sung Lee (이재성), head of LG Electronics' ES Business Division and president, said, "With this Nvidia DSX specification approval as a springboard, we will supply cooling solutions with reliability and efficiency to global big tech companies and expand our push into the next-generation liquid-cooling market."
