Bitcoin has overtaken Tesla and Samsung Electronics by market capitalisation.

On Sept. 20, blockchain outlet U.Today reported Bitcoin’s market value was tallied at $1.615 trillion. That surpassed Tesla at $1.438 trillion and Samsung Electronics at $1.237 trillion. Bitcoin ranked 13th among tracked assets, while Tesla and Samsung Electronics placed 14th and 15th, respectively.

The ranking shift followed last week’s rebound in Bitcoin’s price. Bitcoin climbed as high as $81,914 on Sept. 19, marking a weekly peak. It stayed above $81,000 over the weekend and its market value expanded to about $1.63 trillion on Sept. 20. It later gave up part of the gains on profit-taking and most recently stood at $80,762, down 1.02 percent over 24 hours.

Last week brought no shortage of factors that could have weighed on markets, but Bitcoin buying was not sharply shaken. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage point on Sept. 16, adjusting the target range to 3.75 to 4.00 percent. Rate hikes can typically weigh on risk assets including cryptocurrencies, but Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose instead.

Policy factors also influenced price moves. In the U.S. Senate, the Clarity bill secured 49 votes on Sept. 15, falling short of the 60 needed to pass. Bitcoin briefly slipped below $74,887 that day but soon stabilised. Selling was limited because market participants were interpreted as having priced in the possibility the bill would fail.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission took measures seen as friendly to the cryptocurrency market. The SEC on Sept. 17 announced a temporary and conditional exemptive order allowing some trading platforms to offer trading in tokenised forms of U.S.-listed stocks. The so-called “innovation exemption” set out a regulatory path for certain tokenised securities trading platforms to trade blockchain-based tokenised U.S. stocks under specific conditions. The measure took effect immediately.

The cryptocurrency market extended gains later in the week. Bitcoin rose over four days from a Sept. 16 low of $74,962 to $81,914 on Sept. 19. Profit-taking followed, but it held the $80,000 level. The market appeared to focus more on the SEC’s new regulatory path than on an unexpected strengthening of global monetary tightening.

Bitcoin’s move past Tesla and Samsung Electronics by market capitalisation shows the recent rebound has also affected rankings among major global assets. Key points to watch include whether Bitcoin can hold the $80,000 level and whether the SEC’s regulatory changes lead to broader capital flows across the cryptocurrency market.
