Vitalik Buterin has again made clear Ethereum’s push to strengthen privacy.

U.Today, a blockchain outlet, reported on Sept. 20 that Buterin wrote in a recent post on X, “It’s only dead if you give up,” adding, “I’m not giving up on privacy. I’m doubling down.”

The comments coincide with a trend in which privacy has risen as a technical priority for Ethereum. Work inside Ethereum is expanding to cover wallets, how transactions are included, private blockchain reads and shielding transfers. As a public blockchain, Ethereum has long made transparency a strength because addresses, balances and transaction histories can be easily checked. Recent roadmaps are shifting toward supplementing privacy within that structure.

In March, Buterin argued Ethereum should be seen as part of a so-called “refuge technology” ecosystem. It is a plan to build open-source infrastructure that lets people transact and communicate without government pressure. In the process, he presented privacy and individual autonomy as key pillars.

Buterin later said Ethereum should not give up four core properties. He grouped censorship resistance, open source, privacy and security and called them “CROPS.” On May 20, he also presented a path to pursue “native privacy” that includes account abstraction, key-based nonces and access-layer work. He urged the Ethereum Foundation to focus resources on maintaining censorship resistance, privacy and security.

The development direction is also becoming more specific. A privacy roadmap now under discussion focuses on private reads, private writes and private proofs. Private reads are meant to prevent infrastructure providers from accurately determining what a user is viewing. Private writes address exposure issues when a user actually sends a transaction.

FOCIL is also under review. The structure aims to make it difficult for influential block builders to arbitrarily avoid processing transactions related to privacy protocols. Ethereum researchers are also reviewing a protocol-level shielding pool for ETH and ERC-20 transfers.

Buterin compared the current development “stromap” with the 2023 roadmap last August and pointed to “top-level interest in strong privacy” as one of the biggest changes. That means privacy has gained weight not only in long-term direction but also in the actual development sequence.

Buterin’s sense of urgency on privacy has been consistent. In an interview in August 2025, he defined privacy as a fundamental element of the original cypherpunk movement and said, “Privacy is freedom.” In this flow, strengthening Ethereum’s privacy is leading to a task of re-establishing network principles and design direction rather than simply adding functions.
