OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (샘 알트먼) has decided not to pursue an initial public offering, Axios reported on Sept. 13 local time.
Altman told Fortune in an interview that the company will not list this year because much work remains related to safety, the report said.
The remarks came as concerns grow over doomsday-scenario fears linked to AI after an Anthropic employee resigned and strongly warned of AI risks.
Altman told Fortune Executive Editor Allison Shontell that now is not the right time to go public. "Not in 2026, there is a lot to do," he said. He added that he was glad the company, as a private firm, can keep working to meet what is currently required on safety and alignment and to consider how the industry and government can cooperate.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also warned the same day that the pace of AI development should be slowed. Altman stressed that everyone should agree on the principle that they must not take actions that risk handing control of the future to AI.
