South Korea's Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission recommended that broadcasters covering the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, which open on Sept. 19, refrain from excessive duplicate scheduling and instead program events sequentially by channel and platform.

The commission held its 33rd committee written meeting on Sept. 4 and passed a recommendation aimed at guaranteeing universal viewing rights.

Under the recommendation, broadcasters should schedule Asian Games coverage so that specific events are not excessively duplicated across multiple channels, by adopting sequential scheduling by channel and platform. It makes exceptions for the opening and closing ceremonies and events involving South Korea’s national team, which it said draw high public interest.

The commission also asked broadcasters to actively air less popular sports and new events such as e-sports so that viewers who want to watch are not left out.

It also recommended expanded broadcasts of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games, scheduled for Sept. 18 to 24 next month, to raise public interest and viewing opportunities.

The recommendation was decided at the fourth meeting of the ninth Universal Viewing Rights Guarantee Committee held last month.

Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chairman of the Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission, said, "The Asian Games are an international event that gives people joy and inspiration," and added, "I ask broadcast rights holders to make efforts so that the public's viewing rights can be effectively guaranteed."
