Alibaba\'s T-Head releases open-source software for its AI chips
Alibaba Group Holding\'s chip design unit T-Head said it will release its in-house software stack as open source. The move aims to challenge Nvidia\'s dominance of the CUDA ecosystem, the South China Morning Post reported on July 18. T-Head said it will make the full SAIL technical stack used to develop its Zhenwu series AI chips available free to overseas developers.

Alibaba unveiled its new artificial intelligence chip, the Zhenwu M890, stepping up competition in China to replace Nvidia chips as U.S. curbs on semiconductor exports to China continue. It also introduced a server system and a large language model at an Alibaba Cloud Summit. The company disclosed a roadmap for follow-on chips and said its T-Head unit has supplied more than 560,000 Zhenwu chips to over 400 customers.

Alibaba unveils CPU for AI agents based on RISC-V instead of Arm
Alibaba has unveiled its XuanTie C950 CPU for AI agents, CNBC reported on March 24. The chip is designed for data centres and focuses on supporting inferencing to run AI models. CNBC said CPUs play an important role when agents perform multi-step tasks. Alibaba’s DAMO Academy said the XuanTie CPU can be customised for specific inferencing patterns, improving performance by more than 30 percent.
