WikiLeaks\' decision to accept bitcoin in 2011 is drawing renewed attention as a first major case showing cryptocurrency could bypass blocks in traditional financial networks. After the “Cablegate” disclosures, WikiLeaks lost access to major payment and remittance providers including Visa, Mastercard and PayPal, wiping out about 95 percent of its income. It then solicited donations via bitcoin addresses, a move later followed by services such as WordPress and the Internet Archive.
