U.S. Air Force weighs space-based solar power for remote military operations, seeks germanium supplies
The U.S. Air Force is considering space-based solar power as a new way to supply electricity for remote military operations by wirelessly transmitting power generated by satellites to receivers on the ground. The Defense Department is supporting germanium, a key material for satellite solar cells, while pursuing private-sector contracts and technology validation. The Air Force has begun testing the concept with Overture Energy and is also conducting internal research projects.
