Thermal runaway detection and robot reconnaissance rollout speeds up to prevent battery fires
Industry is widening responses to lithium battery fires by deploying unmanned reconnaissance and expanding detection beyond visible flames. Thermal runaway is hard to spot in advance because voltage and temperature change little until just before it occurs, and remaining batteries can run away again after a fire is put out. Off-gas sensing is being tested as an early-warning method, while robots are used to inspect sites after extinguishing. Overseas standards are beginning to require off-gas monitoring.

Ultraminiature optical chip smaller than a grain of salt aims to ease quantum computing, data centre bottlenecks
An ultraminiature optical chip has emerged that could sharply reduce the burden of laser control, long seen as a key obstacle to scaling quantum computers. The chip, about 1 square millimetre in size, rapidly redirects a small number of laser beams to many target points. It can scan about 68.6 million light spots per second, more than 50 times faster than micromirror-based beam scanners. The technology remains at the experimental stage.

Nvidia unveils Ising open-source quantum AI models to tackle errors
Nvidia has unveiled an open-source artificial intelligence model family called Ising to calibrate quantum computers and correct errors. The company aims to use AI to address key bottlenecks that have held back commercial quantum computing. It chose decoding and calibration as initial applications. Ising includes an error-correction decoding model and a calibration model that automates ongoing tuning work. Nvidia also released guides, training data and Nvidia NIM microservices.
