OpenAI buys Rain AI patents to speed in-house AI chip strategy
OpenAI is buying key patents from semiconductor startup Rain AI to press ahead with its in-house AI chip development strategy. The company failed to acquire Rain AI outright but secured intellectual property to bolster hardware capabilities. The deal amount and the number of patents were not disclosed. The purchase gives OpenAI a basis to use Rain AI’s neuromorphic semiconductor technology as it seeks to reduce reliance on Nvidia GPUs and lower AI service operating costs.
