MSIT launches series of meetings to draft sixth science and technology master plan
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT has begun a series of meetings to reflect views from research sites as it drafts the sixth national science and technology master plan for 2026 to 2030. The first session, chaired by Science and Technology Innovation Office head Park In-kyu, focused on the science and technology innovation system. Participants discussed R&D systems, strengthening competitiveness across universities, public institutes and companies, and support for young scientists.

Legal foundation set for region-led R&D system with regional science and technology advisory councils
South Korea has set a legal foundation to pursue more efficient regional research and development policy, including establishing regional science and technology advisory councils under provincial governors. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the National Assembly passed a bill on promoting region-led science and technology innovation. The law requires local governments to draw up five-year plans and allows administrative and financial support from the central government. It takes effect on Jan. 1 next year.

Women account for 31.9 percent of new hires in science and technology, up 3.8 points in five years
Women accounted for 31.9 percent of newly hired staff in science and technology, up 3.8 percentage points from 2020, a survey found. The share of women employees rose 0.6 points from a year earlier to 23.7 percent, extending a five-year rise. Women held 13.1 percent of managerial posts and led 13.3 percent of research projects. Institutions running voluntary work-life balance programmes stood at 57.0 percent.
