Handheld game consoles seen shifting from affordable alternatives as prices rise
Handheld game consoles are moving into price ranges that make them harder to view as inexpensive alternatives, according to an analysis. Devices that once let users play PC and console games at relatively low cost are seeing sharp price increases, including Valve’s Steam Deck and Nintendo’s Switch 2. The Verge cited higher memory and storage costs, tariffs and higher oil prices. As prices climb, the market is shifting toward higher-priced, discretionary hobby devices.

Chipflation drives up console and PC prices, raising fears gaming becomes an expensive hobby
A memory chip shortage driven by a surge in AI server demand is rippling through the games market, lifting prices for consoles, PCs and potentially software. Prices for DRAM and NAND have jumped, and companies such as Sony have raised PS5 prices. Steam has revised currency pricing parameters for South Korea, which could lift local game prices depending on publisher choices. Higher device and server costs may hit demand and raise risks for Korean developers preparing major PC and console releases.

The price now exceeds the cost of two Nvidia RTX 5080 Founders Edition cards, priced at $1,998, and is also above the price range of a single RTX 5090.
