Nearly half of EU cities fail to meet 2030 air pollution standards, report shows

Nearly half of European Union cities do not meet stricter 2030 standards for fine particulate matter, according to a report analysing air quality in 394 cities. Using verified 2024 data, the report found 181 cities exceeded the 2030 PM2.5 threshold. It said traffic measures alone will not be enough because about two-thirds of urban PM2.5 comes from outside city boundaries, calling for broader action on agriculture, heating and other sources.
