Calls grow to expand broadcasting development fund into audiovisual media development fund including OTT
Debate over restructuring South Korea’s Broadcasting and Communications Development Fund has stalled for years, as some now call for expanding it into an “audiovisual media development fund” that also covers OTT services and platforms. Seoul National University professor Hong Jong-yoon proposed broadening contributors and using the money for regional and smaller media support and content diversity. Separately, calls persist to merge the fund with the Information and Communications Promotion Fund, a move repeatedly recommended by government evaluators.

Korea OTT Forum, journalism society to hold seminar on future of local broadcasting in AI, OTT era
The Korea OTT Forum and a research group under the Korean Association for Journalism and Communication Studies will hold a special seminar on Sept. 11 at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Gwangju, they said on Saturday. Held during the 2026 ACE Fair and hosted by Gwangju MBC, the seminar will discuss response strategies and policy support for local broadcasters facing challenges from OTT, global platforms and generative AI.

Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission selects 15 groups to nominate public broadcaster directors
South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission said on Thursday it has made its final selection of groups that will nominate directors for public broadcasters. It approved 15 groups, five each for KBS, the Munhwa Broadcasting Foundation and EBS. The commission said it will ask the selected groups to recommend director candidates by June 26. It plans to proceed with requesting appointments for KBS directors and appointing directors for the foundation and EBS after nominations are completed.
