Mara posts $611.3 million Q2 net loss hit by bitcoin price drop
Bitcoin miner Mara (MARA) swung to a net loss of $611.3 million in the second quarter, hurt by a 28 percent drop in the average bitcoin price. The company said its quarterly bitcoin output was the highest in more than a year, but the price decline outweighed a 3 percent increase in production. Mara held 35,577 bitcoin worth $2.1 billion at fair value as of June 30. It is also expanding AI and HPC infrastructure.

Bitcoin miners speed shift to AI data centres, opportunity cost may rise
Bitcoin mining companies are redirecting power and facilities to AI infrastructure as mining profitability deteriorates. Some large miners have begun converting sites, signing long-term computing contracts and cutting new mining equipment spending. Bitcoin trades around $64,000, about 50% below its October 2025 peak, while fees lag and the April 2024 halving cut block rewards. AI data centres offer higher power rates and long-term deals, but critics warn the shift may be poorly timed and difficult to reverse due to high capital costs.
