Bitcoin futures short selling eases, but ETFs and perpetual futures remain tepid
Leveraged funds cut their net short exposure in CME bitcoin futures by 5,566.5 bitcoin in the July 21 to 28 period, a futures-only U.S. CFTC report showed. But asset managers also reduced exposure by 2,204.3 bitcoin, limiting the case for a clear bullish signal. Indicators in spot and derivatives markets were also muted. Perpetual futures buying and funding demand weakened, while spot bitcoin ETFs saw $526.5 million in net outflows over four sessions through July 28.

Bitcoin rebound driven by whales and ETFs; $69,000 is pivotal
Bitcoin continues trading below $69,000, a level seen as the average cost basis for short-term holders, with the U.S. Federal Reserve decision on July 29 set to test whether the rebound can last. The rally has relied mainly on spot bitcoin ETF inflows and buying by large wallets holding 1,000 to 10,000 bitcoin. Rising oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields are capping gains, while $63,000 is highlighted as key support.

U.S. CFTC approves bitcoin perpetual futures, raising prospects of derivatives market shifts
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has allowed bitcoin perpetual futures to enter regulated markets, raising expectations of changes in the structure of the U.S. crypto derivatives market. The CFTC approved the listing of KalshiEX’s BTCPERP contract. Perpetual futures are widely used offshore and have been difficult for U.S. investors to access. The approval could reshape product design, open access for institutions and intensify exchange competition, though liquidity may not move to the United States immediately.
