Korea panel blocks 64 overseas sites generating AI porn and deepfakes

South Korea's Broadcast Media Communication Deliberation Committee decided to block access to 64 overseas websites that can generate sexual deepfakes and pornography using photos of real people. The panel said many of the sites support Korean and allow users to create deepfakes or pornographic material with small payments. It cited penalties under a special law on sexual violence for producing sexual fake videos and under the Information and Communications Network Act for distributing obscene material.

South Korea enacts national AI ethics principles outlining three core values and seven principles

South Korea has enacted the "Republic of Korea AI Ethics Principles," a shared standard for society to follow in AI development, provision and use. It sets three core values: human dignity, the public good and humanity's sustainability. It also outlines seven principles including human-centricity, privacy protection, fairness and inclusiveness, accountability, safety, reliability and transparency. The Science and ICT ministry said the principles lack legal force but will underpin sector-by-sector ethics standards and guidelines.

MSIT launches generative AI service to check ICT regulations

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT will provide a generative AI-based regulatory search service so companies can quickly check whether rules and permits apply to new technologies and services. The ministry and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency said they will offer the "ICT Regulatory Sandbox Rapid Regulation Check Service" to 300 companies, including ICT regulatory sandbox applicants. Vouchers for up to 100 questions per month will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis through year-end.
