Movie Scene Map, a website that lets users find everything from movie and drama filming locations to settings for games, animation and comics at a glance on a world map, has been unveiled.

On Sept. 2 (local time), Japanese media outlet Gigazine reported that Movie Scene Map uses Wikidata, the Wikimedia Foundation’s collaboratively edited database, to link works and real places. It currently includes more than 15,500 locations in 166 countries, more than 9,200 movies and dramas, and more than 2,100 games, as well as animation and comic information.

Movies and dramas mark real filming locations based on Wikidata’s filming location (P915). Because games, anime and comics are not filmed works, it uses narrative location (P840) to display story settings. Since last month, filming and setting information from each work’s English Wikipedia has also been used as supplementary material. Sources from Wikidata and Wikipedia are displayed separately.

The map shows dots in different colours depending on the type of place. Orange indicates countries and regions, blue landmarks and buildings, emerald cities, green natural scenery, purple castles and palaces, and red roads and squares. Selecting a point shows related works and a description of the place, and clicking a title lets users check other areas linked to the work.

On the River Thames in Britain, filming information is registered for works such as "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", "Doctor Strange" and "Full Metal Jacket". In Japan, Shinjuku Gyoen is shown as the setting of director Makoto Shinkai’s "The Garden of Words", meaning the map can also be used to find so-called pilgrimage sites. But because the data relies on user-built Wikidata and Wikipedia, there may be omissions or inaccurate information. Missing filming locations can be added to Wikidata with sources and may be reflected on the map in the next data update.

A privacy policy has also been published. For server operations, it keeps logs such as IP addresses and access times for 14 days. An optional analytics function that records click locations and mouse movements is activated only if users agree, and related detailed data is stored for 45 days.
