[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] As Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at a September event next week, additional information has emerged on specifications, software features and the launch schedule. A 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch inner screen are being discussed, along with iPad-like multitasking features and MagSafe support.

On Sept. 1 (local time), IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioned key specifications and features of the “iPhone Ultra,” known as Apple’s foldable iPhone, in an interview.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to offer a 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded and a 5.5-inch cover display when folded. It was reported that Apple’s latest processor and the latest modem will be used for the processor and communications chip.

MagSafe, whose inclusion has recently drawn mixed expectations, is likely to remain. On whether MagSafe will be included, Gurman said, “MagSafe is included,” and mentioned that the feature will be included in the foldable iPhone as well.

There has also been speculation that MagSafe could be omitted because foldable phones require a design different from existing iPhones due to structural characteristics, but Apple appears set to continue the magnetic accessory ecosystem it built with existing iPhones.

Display and hinge technology are also cited as key differentiators for the iPhone Ultra. The product is said to use a panel that minimizes creases when the screen is folded and a liquid metal hinge. The fold mark does not appear to disappear completely. Gurman explained that the iPhone Ultra’s display is not at a level that is entirely crease-free, but said it could show improvement at a similar level to, or better than, Samsung Electronics’ new foldable phone, thanks to a hinge that is more durable.

Because fold marks and hinge durability largely determine the completeness of a foldable phone, the product is likely to be directly compared with foldables from rivals such as Samsung Electronics once it is unveiled.

On the software side, multitasking functions that take advantage of the larger screen are expected to be strengthened. The iPhone Ultra is expected to support iPad-like app layout and split-screen functions based on iOS 27. It was reported to allow multiple apps to be kept open at the same time, and to offer a feature for moving data using drag-and-drop between apps. This is seen as Apple’s strategy to use the foldable display to improve productivity rather than simply making the screen larger.

A forecast on the timing of the launch has also emerged. Gurman mentioned there is positive news regarding the iPhone Ultra’s release. He did not disclose a specific date or quarter, but it was interpreted as suggesting it may not take an excessively long time from the product’s unveiling to its actual release.

The price is expected to be quite high, in line with previous forecasts. The iPhone Ultra’s starting price is being discussed as possibly exceeding $2,000 (about 2.74 million won). With a price far higher than a typical bar-type iPhone, it suggests Apple may introduce its first foldable phone as an ultra-high-priced premium product rather than a mass-market model.

The newly disclosed information is also drawing attention because it shows Apple’s foldable strategy is targeting hardware and software at the same time. On the hardware side, it emphasizes a display that minimizes fold marks, a liquid metal hinge and MagSafe, while on the software side it provides a multitasking experience closer to the iPad.

As a result, next week’s Apple event is expected to focus on confirming the actual product name, the level of fold marks and hinge durability, how well multitasking functions are implemented, and the launch schedule and price.
