The United States is experiencing its biggest-ever cyclospora infection outbreak while the federal research base linked to the parasite is also being shaken. With funding cut and the possible loss of specialist staff due to a planned relocation of research institutions, there is concern that future capacity to trace food contamination sources and respond could weaken.
On Aug. 31 local time, IT outlet Ars Technica reported that 2 of 3 programmes at the U.S. Department of Agriculture that have handled most cyclospora research effectively halted after failing to secure budgets for fiscal 2026. The remaining programme kept its budget, but the Trump administration’s plan to move work at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center near Washington, D.C., to Iowa increased the likelihood of researcher departures. No current researchers are reported to be planning to move to Iowa.
The timing is also not good. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had confirmed 17,180 U.S. infection cases in laboratories as of Aug. 24 and was additionally investigating 11,844 cases. Hospitalisations total 922 and deaths 2. In the same season last year, only 1,180 cases were reported.
Cyclospora is an intestinal parasite that can spread through fresh vegetables and fruit, and it is harder to study than E. coli or salmonella. It multiplies only in the human intestine, making laboratory culturing difficult, and the amount excreted in faeces is not consistent. Its genome is larger than bacteria and it reproduces sexually, making it difficult to analyse genetic links among cases and trace them back to a single contamination source.
Researchers had viewed this year’s large outbreak as a chance to secure diverse samples and identify the parasite’s characteristics. But teams that lost funding are focusing on preserving existing samples instead of new analyses. The industry worries that there are few specialists in the field, making it hard to restore accumulated expertise in a short time even if funding returns. The USDA said research would continue without disruption, but if staff losses materialise, there could be a significant gap in U.S. food safety research.
