With Apple set to hold a September product launch event, speculation has emerged that more than 10 existing products, including iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods models, could be discontinued.
On Aug. 31, IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that Apple may discontinue existing models in the same product lines after unveiling new products at its Sept. 9 launch event. Apple often removes previous-generation products from its sales lineup when releasing new products, raising expectations of a large-scale reshuffle this time as well.
Products currently mentioned as possible candidates for discontinuation are 11 models: iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation (ANC), Apple TV 4K third generation, HomePod mini first generation and HomePod second generation. Some are assessed as having a relatively high likelihood of being discontinued, while others are seen as highly uncertain.
The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are seen as particularly likely to be discontinued. Apple has removed the previous-generation Pro models from its sales list when launching new Pro models. By contrast, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus and some home products are classified as difficult to predict in terms of future sales.
The iPhone 16's fate could depend on the release schedule for the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2. Under a typical upgrade cycle, Apple could cut the price of the previous-generation model after launching a new base iPhone and keep selling it longer. But reports have continued that the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 could be delayed to early 2027, leaving uncertainty over whether Apple will keep selling the iPhone 16 until then.
Pricing policy is also a variable. With unusual price increases continuing across Apple products recently, it has also been suggested that Apple could raise prices for new products while continuing to sell existing models at relatively lower prices. In that case, the timing of discontinuations could be pushed back compared with past years.
Ultimately, the actual products discontinued and the scale are expected to be determined by the new products unveiled on Sept. 9 and pricing policy. Products likely to be directly replaced by new models, such as the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, face a high chance of sales ending, but the iPhone 16 and some home products may have room to remain on sale depending on price points and the product lineup.
This event is expected to be an occasion not only to unveil new products but also to see how Apple reshapes its product lineup and pricing strategy. How many of the 11 products mentioned are actually discontinued is expected to be confirmed through Apple's official sales list after the event.
