The Korea Banks Federation has appointed former BC Card vice president Woo Sang-hyun (우상현) as its new executive director.

The federation said on Sept. 1 it appointed Woo as executive director after obtaining approval from an employee general meeting.

Woo, born in 1965, graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in economics and earned a master’s degree in environmental management from Yale University’s graduate school in the United States.

He entered public service after passing the 33rd national civil service exam. He served as head of the Education and Culture Fiscal Division at the former Planning and Budget Ministry, and as head of the Small Business and Subprime Finance Division and the Industrial Finance Division at the Financial Services Commission. He also worked as minister-counsellor at South Korea’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva, and as a director-general at the Financial Services Commission’s secretariat.

He later moved to the private financial sector. He served as executive director and vice president at Hyundai Card and Hyundai Capital, and later as a vice president at BC Card.
