SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, South Korea's three mobile carriers, are moving to expand the ID QR verification feature on the PASS mobile authentication platform.

The three carriers said on Sunday they will run the "One QR scan, double the peace of mind!" campaign through Oct. 5 to encourage use of PASS ID QR verification. They said there are limits to confirming authenticity by sight alone as cases of forged or altered IDs have risen using apps or composite images that mimic mobile ID screens.

PASS IDs apply security technologies to prevent forgery and alteration, including checks on activation and device information occupancy, capture prevention, dynamic images and limits on verification time. The carriers said ID forgery and alteration can be punished under the Road Traffic Act, and they will work to spread a culture of ID verification through QR scans.

During the campaign period, customers can apply for the event if they use the QR verification function in the PASS app to check another person's ID or present their own PASS ID QR. A total of 2,076 people will receive various prizes through a draw, including a Galaxy Z Fold8 512GB, a Dyson Airwrap Coanda2x Multi-styler and Dryer, and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

The three carriers said, "We hope this campaign helps establish a culture of confirming identity through QR verification without concerns over ID forgery and alteration." They added, "We will continue to create an environment where anyone can verify IDs safely."
