[DigitalToday reporter Hyunwoo Choo] Tesla’s Cybercab launch event in Austin on Sept. 3 may feature a plan to deploy more than 1,000 robotaxis at scale. Electrek, an electric vehicle outlet, reported on Aug. 28 that the key to the event is not the announced volume but the number of vehicles actually running on roads a month later.
The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle first unveiled at the “We, Robot” event in October 2024. Tesla then presented a design without a steering wheel or pedals, butterfly doors and a price below $30,000. Observers said the event could be closer to a reintroduction of the previously revealed vehicle than the debut of an entirely new model.
Tesla is expected to announce plans to incorporate the Cybercab into its existing robotaxi service at the event. Austin is expected to be the first target area, and it was also suggested that Tampa and Orlando, where robotaxi service began in July, along with Dallas and Houston, could be included.
The event is likely to highlight a form that removes the steering wheel, pedals and human safety monitors. The driving software is expected to use the same FSD system used in the Model Y robotaxi.
The biggest announcement is expected to be fleet size. Tesla could unveil a plan to deploy more than 1,000 Cybercabs at once, but the announced fleet and the fleet actually in operation could differ. Tesla robotaxis were tracked at around 50 active vehicles on a weekly basis across the overall market, and around 20 on a daily basis. Fully unsupervised vehicles increased to about 25 in spring and were then presented as stagnating or declining.
Safety validation, rather than vehicle supply, was cited as a limiting factor. Elon Musk mentioned “strict validation” to investors as a constraint on expansion, and Tesla said it is waiting to expand after a rewrite of FSD. That means even if it announces more than 1,000 Cybercabs, the number actually operating on roads could be far smaller.
The Cybercab’s power efficiency was cited as a strength. The vehicle consumes 165 Wh per mile, making it the most efficient among Tesla vehicles, and its operating costs could be lower than the Model Y. But it was also pointed out that the bottleneck is not vehicle efficiency or production volume, but driving safety and operational stability needed for large-scale service.
Ultimately, the success or failure of this launch is likely to be decided not on the day of the event but by operating results afterward. If the number of vehicles actually running without drivers remains at the level of a few dozen in October, the event could be assessed as a re-release that merely expanded the outward form, as in the 2024 unveiling.
