Hanbit Media, an IT publishing brand of Hanbit&N, said on Aug. 28 it has published a book titled "Living as a Parent in the AI Era" about what parents should pay attention to as children increasingly use generative AI.

The book is written by Deok-jin Kim (김덕진), a professor in the Department of Computer and AI Engineering at Sejong Cyber University and head of the IT Communication Research Institute, and Han-na Lim (임한나), a 14-year emotional intelligence educator who previously worked as a kindergarten teacher. Based on their experiences raising a child as a couple and reaching agreements through challenges, the book shares guidance on when and how children should start using AI, what to delegate to AI, and which experiences should remain the child’s own.

The authors deliver their message by presenting side by side an “father’s perspective,” which looks first at the possibilities of technology, and a “mother’s perspective,” which first checks a child’s feelings, and then offering standards the two agreed on.

The publisher said the book identifies capabilities children should develop in the AI era as the “power to ask” by forming questions themselves, the “power to write” by expressing their thoughts in their own words, the “power to endure” without relying on quick correct answers, and the “power to build relationships” by communicating with people beyond screens.

It also includes 5 AI principles the authors’ family established through trial and error and 9 examples of how to use AI, such as creating illustration, storybook and game apps. The book also includes “18 questions, 18 answers: Parent Q&A,” which organizes questions parents frequently ask, such as when to start using AI and the scope of paid subscriptions.

“More important than learning new tools quickly is fostering the ability to judge for oneself, with any tool, ‘why’ and ‘how’ to use it,” the authors said.
