[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Bandai has unveiled a new ring-shaped Tamagotchi designed to be worn on a finger. It keeps the raising elements of existing Tamagotchi while changing the device so it can be worn like an accessory.

On Aug. 27, Japanese outlet ITmedia reported that Bandai unveiled the ring-shaped Tamagotchi, the Tamagotchi Ring, and began taking preorders. It is priced at 7,700 yen (about 66,700 won).

The main unit is a small device measuring about 28 mm long and 23 mm wide. It has a colour display, and users can raise a Tamagotchi while wearing it on a finger. It also applies a system in which it can grow into more than 30 types of Tamagotchi depending on the way it is raised.

The basic raising method is similar to earlier series. Users must manage its condition by feeding it and cleaning up its waste. It also adds mini-games and an interior remodelling function that allows users to decorate a room.

The exterior is designed to be closer to a fashion accessory than a toy. The product will be released in 3 colours. Pink&Pearl White applies an aurora pearl finish to the frame, while Light Blue&Metallic Gold and Black&Metallic Silver each apply plated finishes.

It supports ring sizes 10 and 14. Bandai will also provide spacers so it can be used with the two ring sizes. Preorders began at 10 a.m. that day on Bandai's own direct-sales site, Premium Bandai.

The product stands out for expanding the device's form factor into a wearable shape while keeping Tamagotchi's core content. It is not simply a smaller version of existing products, but is made in ring form with a colour display, mini-games and room decoration features, emphasising the wearing experience itself.

An assessment has emerged that Bandai, by introducing a new Tamagotchi form factor, is simultaneously targeting nostalgia for retro games and demand for accessory-type wearable devices.
