Apple’s next iPhone operating system, iOS 27, is increasingly likely to launch in mid-September.

On Aug. 25 local time, IT outlet 9to5Mac reported Apple is expected to distribute the final version to general users in September after months of beta testing.

For now, mid-September, especially around Sept. 14, is being cited as the most likely timing. Apple has released major iOS updates in September each year, and recent distribution schedules have followed a similar pattern. iOS 26 was released on Sept. 15, iOS 18 on Sept. 16, iOS 17 on Sept. 18 and iOS 16 on Sept. 12.

The official release date is typically confirmed at Apple’s new iPhone launch event. Apple’s annual iPhone event has generally been held about a week before the operating system release, and there are expectations that the iPhone 18 Pro will be unveiled around Sept. 9 this year. If that schedule holds, iOS 27 is likely to move into general distribution right after the event.

This update is expected to include changes across the iPhone’s core apps and the broader device ecosystem. Apple is expected to add new features to Wallet, Photos, Messages and Notes, and improve features related to CarPlay and AirPods. The outlet in particular pointed to a "major revamp of Siri AI" as a key change. It suggests an update focused more on strengthening the voice assistant’s competitiveness than on feature additions themselves.

Supported models are also of interest. iOS 27 is expected to run on all iPhone models that supported iOS 26. Some older devices have been dropped with the introduction of a new operating system, but this time it has been suggested the burden of device replacement may not be large.

For markets and users, Apple’s approach to the rollout is also a point to watch, alongside the launch timing. Apple has conducted beta testing throughout the summer and then distributed the final version in September. The outlet also said iOS 27 has "been offered as a beta throughout this summer." That narrows the remaining variables to the completeness of detailed features and the official announcement schedule.

Against this backdrop, iOS 27 is expected to serve as a test of how Apple will tie iPhone software to artificial intelligence features, beyond a simple annual update. For now, what is confirmed is the expected timing and the direction of key changes, and the final schedule is likely to be formalised at the September iPhone event.
