Nintendo has unveiled two new bundles ahead of a Switch 2 price increase.
On Aug. 25 local time, IT outlet Engadget reported that Nintendo introduced a "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort" bundle and a revamped version of the existing "Mario Kart World" bundle. It will include a 90-day Nintendo Switch Online individual membership voucher in both products.
The key is the Switch 2 console price increase taking effect from Sept. 1. The Switch 2 price will rise by $50 to $500 from $450. In line with that, the "Nintendo Switch 2 plus Mario Kart World" bundle price was adjusted to $550, $50 more than the previous bundle. The revamped version adds a three-month Switch Online membership that was missing at launch. The game is provided as a digital version, not a physical package.
Nintendo said the revamped Mario Kart World bundle will be released in late September and, as of that point, will be $38 cheaper than buying the console, game and Switch Online membership separately. It said the calculation differs based on current prices. Buying the console at $450 and the game at $80 separately now is $12 cheaper than the new bundle. If a one-year Switch Online membership is chosen at the same price, it can be used for nine months longer than the three months included in the bundle.
The new "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort" bundle will be released on Oct. 22. Sales will start on the same day as the game’s release, and it will be priced at $530. Nintendo said the bundle offers a $28 discount compared with buying items separately. Based on that, the game price for "Nintendo Switch Sports Resort" is effectively set at $50.
The bundle revamp also ties in with Nintendo’s limited-time bundle policy introduced in May. At the time, Nintendo announced a Switch 2 bundle that allows buyers to choose one among Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokemon Pokopia, and the company said the package would be sold only for a limited period. Ahead of the price increase, the existing limited-time bundles can be seen as being phased out and replaced by bundles aligned with the new pricing structure.
As a result, consumer options are expected to vary by timing. Before September, buying the console and game separately may be cheaper, but after the price increase, the bundle discount could stand out again. Nintendo chose to include an online membership in both new bundles to partly offset the burden from the price increase. In particular, the Mario Kart World bundle was strengthened in content with the addition of the 90-day voucher that was not included in the original release version.
The announcement also shows that the bundle price adjustment is not a simple change in contents, but a move to realign its sales strategy after the console price increase. Nintendo plans to launch the Mario Kart World bundle first in late September and add the Sports Resort bundle on Oct. 22, reworking product offerings during the Switch 2’s initial sales period.
