Dubai's VDX has received regulatory certification as the world's first commercial eVTOL-dedicated vertiport, entering the preparation phase for commercial operations.

On Aug. 25 local time, electric vehicle outlet Electrek reported that the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) granted certification to Dubai VDX developed by Skyports Infrastructure.

VDX is a facility for small battery-powered aircraft that take off and land vertically without a runway. The certification is a key procedure required to push for commercial eVTOL operations in Dubai and is seen as the first step in building Dubai's air taxi network.

Skyports said VDX will be the first and key transfer hub in the air taxi network being pursued in Dubai. The facility has 2 dedicated pads and high-power DC fast-charging infrastructure. It is designed to reduce turnaround time for electric aircraft. It covers 3,100 square metres and was built to handle up to 170,000 people a year.

Duncan Walker (던컨 워커), CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, called the certification a turning point for the advanced air mobility sector. He said the infrastructure, operating standards and regulatory framework needed for commercial eVTOL services have now become reality. He added that VDX certification and construction of the Dubai air taxi network are moving quickly, bringing the start of commercial air taxi operations a step closer.

Regulators also highlighted the symbolic significance of the certification. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi (사이프 모하메드 알 스와이디), director general of the GCAA, called the world's first certification of a commercial eVTOL-dedicated vertiport a historic achievement showing the future of the United Arab Emirates and the aviation industry. He said it shows the maturity of the country's regulatory system, which allows innovation while maintaining the highest safety standards. He added that the UAE is not only preparing for the future of aviation but is also creating new international standards for advanced air mobility.

Dubai's air taxi vertiport network is being developed jointly by Skyports and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). In addition to VDX, 3 similar facilities are under development in Dubai.

As a result, VDX has gone beyond a single infrastructure certification to serve as a benchmark for commercialising air taxis across Dubai. With dedicated takeoff and landing pads, charging equipment and regulatory certification all secured, attention is expected to focus on the pace of building the remaining hubs and the timing of the start of actual commercial operations.
