South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT will begin work to improve the system for calculating fees for spectrum reallocation.

The ministry said on Wednesday it will form a research panel of experts in law, economics and management, and technology, and hold a kickoff meeting on Aug. 13.

The government reallocates needed spectrum when spectrum usage periods end, taking into account user protection and service continuity. During reallocation, it calculates and imposes fees in accordance with radio wave laws and regulations, considering the spectrum's economic value.

The ministry said spectrum is growing in importance as core infrastructure that determines national competitiveness in the AI era. It said a spectrum reallocation fee calculation system is needed to encourage efficient use and reasonably reflect economic value.

The research panel plans to comprehensively review spectrum's economic value, changes in the market and policy environment, and overseas trends, and draw up measures to improve the system.
