[DigitalToday reporter Lee Won-seon (이원선)] Apple has fixed a serious security vulnerability in the screen-sharing feature in three of its latest macOS updates. IT outlet 9to5Mac reported on Aug. 6 that the measure applies across macOS Sonoma 14.8.9, macOS Sequoia 15.7.9 and macOS Tahoe 26.6.1.

When it released the updates, Apple only said all three versions included important security fixes and were recommended for all users. It later updated its security release page and disclosed specific details.

The issue fixed is a bug that could bypass screen-sharing authentication. Apple said it addressed a flaw that allowed an attacker on a network to authenticate to screen sharing without valid credentials.

So far, there have been no confirmed signs that the vulnerability has been exploited in actual attacks. Still, the flaw could have let an attacker bypass screen sharing authentication checks and remotely access a vulnerable Mac.

The impact could vary depending on system settings and the permissions granted to sessions. An attacker could have viewed the screen, opened apps and files, and performed other actions on the Mac.

Apple patched the vulnerability across the three macOS versions at the same time. Applying the latest update is recommended even if users do not use screen sharing.

Apple has recently continued software updates. In mid-July, it began public betas of next-generation operating systems including iOS 27 and macOS 27, and two days ago it revised its bug bounty program in response to low-quality reports mass-produced by artificial intelligence.

This update is focused on maintaining security across supported versions rather than adding new features. Patching not only the latest release but also different generations of macOS is meaningful in that it broadened the scope of its response to the screen-sharing vulnerability.
