As Google reshuffles its AI organisation, chief scientist Jeff Bezos is leaving the company after 27 years. CNBC reported on Aug. 5 that DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will move to the role of DeepMind chairman and also become chief scientist at parent Alphabet.
Jeff Dean (제프 딘) will leave the company and set up a new firm with Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat (산제이 게마와트). Google has decided to invest in the startup Dean is founding. Sundar Pichai (순다 피차이) said Dean wants to try something new and that the company will support the process of his departure.
Under the reshuffle, DeepMind Chief Technology Officer Koray Kavukcuoglu (코라이 카부크추오글루) was promoted to head of AI. He will lead development of Gemini 4, the next core AI model, and report directly to Pichai.
Hassabis will hand over responsibility for DeepMind’s day-to-day operations and focus more on Alphabet’s AI strategy and global issues. He told employees he would work with Pichai on the broad direction of AI.
Hassabis joined Google after it acquired DeepMind in 2014. In recent years he has led Alphabet-wide AI research.
