Emirates has introduced cryptocurrency payments on its airline ticket booking platform, expanding real-world use cases for Shiba Inu (SHIB).
On July 30, blockchain outlet The Crypto Basic reported that Emirates said in an official announcement it has begun supporting ticket payments via Crypto.com Pay on its website and mobile app.
The payment option supports 30 cryptocurrencies, including Shiba Inu. It also includes major digital assets such as bitcoin, ether, XRP, Cardano, dogecoin, USDT, USDC, litecoin (LTC) and chainlink (LINK). Eligible users are currently limited to qualified customers residing in the United Arab Emirates who hold Crypto.com accounts.
The payment method applies to bookings where ticket prices are displayed and settled in UAE dirhams (AED). Users can select Crypto.com Pay at checkout, and Crypto.com processes the transaction to complete payment in supported cryptocurrencies.
The market is paying attention to the case as an expansion of Shiba Inu's commercial use. Shiba Inu started as a meme coin but has been increasing real-world use by widening payment support. The integration also aligns with Dubai's push to become a digital finance hub. Dubai is pursuing a cashless economy strategy under the "D33 Economic Agenda" and has cited the spread of digital payment technology and expanded adoption of blockchain and cryptocurrencies as key pillars.
Amid this trend, the Shiba Inu community is approaching the project's sixth anniversary. Shiba Inu began on Aug. 1, 2020 as a single-token project released by a developer group including an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi (료시). It later expanded into an ecosystem with multiple tokens, the ShibaSwap decentralised exchange, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the Shibarium layer-2 blockchain.
Ecosystem metrics have also grown. Shibarium, launched in August 2023, has processed more than 1.56 billion transactions across 18.31 million blocks. The number of wallet addresses that interacted with the network was tallied at more than 269.92 million. The number of SHIB on-chain holders stands at about 1.67 million.
Price performance remains weak. SHIB posted a sharp rise once after its launch but has since failed to break out of a long-term downtrend. Its current price is $0.000004600, about 94.8 percent below its all-time high (ATH) of $0.00008845.
Ultimately, the Emirates payment integration is a sign that Shiba Inu's real-world use cases are increasing regardless of any price rebound. With SHIB included in a payment channel tied to actual consumption such as airline tickets, the Shiba Inu ecosystem has expanded the scope of commercial use ahead of its sixth anniversary.
