Naver will end its Naver TV video service at 3 p.m. on Sept. 30. It comes 14 years after the service launched in 2012 under the name "Naver TVcast."

According to the industry on Wednesday, Naver posted a notice that day to general users and creators outlining plans to end the Naver TV service.

As a result, new sign-ups and channel creation will be blocked from Sept. 3. From 3 p.m. on Sept. 10, procedures will begin to move existing creators' profiles to the short-form service Clip. Detailed transfer procedures and policy changes will be announced again in early August.

Naver TV content will be integrated into Clip regardless of whether it is short-form or long-form, or vertical or horizontal. Live-streamed videos provided by partners will be offered through Naver News.

For 1 year after the shutdown, users will still be able to use features such as transferring to Clip, downloading content and copyright protection tools. Administrators can create a Clip profile with an individual or group ID and link Clips from an existing Naver Blog or Naver TV channel to the new profile. Video uploads and scheduled publishing will be supported on PC web as well as on mobile.

Naver explained that the shutdown is aimed at providing a better creator and user experience in line with a changed content-service environment. It also cited a strategy to strengthen content competitiveness by focusing capabilities on Clip and Chizizik, which are seeing growing inflows of users and creators.

Clip surpassed 11 million daily average users in June. Naver has expanded Clip from a short-form 중심 into a platform where various types of content such as images and text gather, and it plans to further strengthen competitiveness by adding Naver TV's long-form content this time.

Naver TV launched as TVcast in 2012 and changed its name to the current "Naver TV" in 2017. In March 2022, it integrated its mobile app into the live platform NOW, but it later reverted the app name back to Naver TV when it ended the NOW service in September 2024.

In August last year, Naver converted the Naver TV app into the "Clip Creator" app equipped with creation, analytics and monetization tools, leaving only the web service. The center of the revamp shifted to Clip, launched in August 2023, and the closure of Naver TV will fully reshape Naver's video-service capabilities around Clip and Chizizik.
