MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that works inside Claude and ChatGPT.

The PayBox is designed so an artificial intelligence agent prepares transactions on a user’s behalf, and the user can complete payments and fund transfers with passkey approval, blockchain media outlet Decrypt reported on July 29.

PayBox is a repository that stores a cryptocurrency wallet and a payment card together. Claude and ChatGPT have been able to do tasks such as investment research, airline ticket price comparisons and purchase planning, but users still had to switch to a separate browser and payment service to complete actual payments. PayBox is a product that fills that gap.

Users can also handle token swaps, cross-chain bridging and fund transfers to decentralised finance protocols such as Aave. Supported networks include Solana and Ethereum, along with 7 Ethereum-compatible chains including Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon.

It also supports the open payments protocol x402. The protocol is supported by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, Amazon Web Services and Anthropic, and was developed by Coinbase and then donated to the Linux Foundation.

MoonPay said the core of the product is securing both convenience and control. Chief Executive Ivan Soto-Wright (이반 소토-라이트) said, "Cards hid cash, and phones hid cards," adding, "Now it is an era where money disappears into conversation." He added that "billions of AI agents will come online, and all of them must be able to safely store, move and use money."

The security structure combines multi-party computation and trusted execution environments. Wallet keys are stored in distributed fragments, and no single entity can access the full key or sign on its own. MoonPay said it made it so neither MoonPay nor an AI agent can unilaterally access a user’s funds or credentials. It also explained that no device, session or party holds a complete key or can sign alone.

Card payments are processed through Visa’s agent commerce protocol. Under the structure, the AI processes payments without seeing the actual card number, focusing on lowering the risk of credential leakage and reuse.

The product is an extension of MoonPay’s expansion of AI payments infrastructure this year. MoonPay 공개 and then launched an app in May that allows users to buy cryptocurrency inside ChatGPT. The service at the time still required users to move to a separate payment page to complete final purchases. In June it also launched a desktop app that directly connects Claude and Codex to a cryptocurrency wallet.

PayBox’s underlying technology comes from Sodot, an Israeli key management company that MoonPay acquired in April in a stock swap valued at about $100 million. Sodot’s technology already protects more than $50 billion in assets and more than 10 million wallets, and counts eToro and BitGo among its clients.

MoonPay has now extended functions that had been limited to information search and purchase decision-making inside AI chatbots to the actual payment execution stage. AI agents process transactions autonomously, while fund access authority is designed not to be concentrated in a single platform or entity, leaving that as a variable that will determine future adoption.
