Billy Markus (빌리 마커스), a Dogecoin co-founder, said paying a fare for the Las Vegas Loop with dogecoin was the most “crypto” moment he has experienced. He also reacted cynically to the recent weakness in the cryptocurrency market, calling it “really boring.”

On July 28, blockchain outlet U.Today reported that Markus, on X, responded to a question asking whether he had done the most crypto-like thing over the weekend. He said he recalled buying a Las Vegas Loop ticket with dogecoin and added that it was not from this weekend but was his most crypto-like experience.

He was again referring to a case in which a co-developer of Dogecoin used the cryptocurrency he created to pay for a transportation service.

The experience Markus mentioned dates back to July 2022. At the time, The Boring Company, led by Elon Musk, announced it would support dogecoin payments as it opened the first Loop station outside the Las Vegas Convention Center. Users were then able to pay fares on the Loop, an underground transportation system in Las Vegas, with dogecoin. The remarks are seen as recalling a representative example of dogecoin being used as a real payment method.

The market mood, however, was not bright. The cryptocurrency market was broadly weaker on July 28, with total liquidations reaching $604 million based on CoinGlass. Dogecoin also fell. It traded at $0.07, down 3.57 percent over the past 24 hours, and was down 4.51 percent over the past week.

Investor sentiment also appeared to weaken in the derivatives market. Open interest in dogecoin-linked futures fell, showing funds leaving the market. That suggests not only a simple price adjustment but also a slowdown in participation in the derivatives market.

The market also cited growing risk-off sentiment as a burden. Analysts said weakness in South Korean semiconductor shares, a sharp drop in the KOSPI and delays in the U.S. Senate’s handling of the CLARITY bill weighed on investor sentiment and affected the cryptocurrency market. The U.S. Senate, ahead of its summer recess on Aug. 8, postponed consideration of the CLARITY bill, which had been discussed as possibly passing, leaving more uncertainty over whether it will pass within the year.

Markus also offered a cynical assessment of the recent bitcoin bear market. Replying to a user’s post, he said, “Market downturns are really boring,” adding, “No one can keep their attention for that long.”

The remarks are not directly linked to a price outlook or project development, but they are meaningful in highlighting again a case in which dogecoin was used as a real payment method. Still, the current market is placing greater emphasis on weakened investor sentiment and outflows of funds than on real-world use cases.
