The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Police Agency on Tuesday held the third Science Policing R&D achievements exhibition at the National Police Agency headquarters building in Seodaemun district, Seoul.

This year's exhibition, themed around AI, consists of five zones covering investigation support, field support, public safety, robotics and mobility. The ministry is taking part as a joint organiser from this year to expand the application of advanced science and technology and AI research and development achievements in policing.

In the AI investigation support zone, organisers showcased seven research outcomes, including an "AI Raman spectrometer" that identifies narcotics ingredients on site and a "fabricated and manipulated content identification system" that detects deepfake videos, audio and images. The AI Raman spectrometer detects 20 types of narcotics and predicts new and mixed drugs by analysing similarities with light source spectra of existing drugs.

The fabricated and manipulated content identification system, being jointly developed by researchers in South Korea and Germany, is advancing technology to identify deepfakes and AI-generated news, aiming for on-site demonstrations in both countries in August. A "combined X-ray device" that automatically detects narcotics hidden in mail items was also unveiled. The device combines transmission X-rays and backscatter X-rays and applies AI reading technology to detect organic materials and narcotics.

The AI field support zone displayed a police work-assistant AI service that supports searches of policing knowledge, materials requested by the National Assembly, and the drafting of press releases and reports, as well as a health management platform to prevent cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases among police officers.

In the AI public safety zone, organisers introduced low-power location tracking technology that automatically reports by identifying the horizontal and vertical position of crime victims, and response technology to secure control authority over illegal drones. Visitors can also try policing robots and training equipment at the robotics and mobility zone and an extended reality (XR) shooting experience venue.

Koo Hyuk-chae (구혁채), first vice minister of the science ministry, said, "AI is establishing itself as key infrastructure that protects the safety of the public." He added, "We will combine advanced science and technology with AI research and development capabilities and expand investment and policy support for science policing R&D."

Yoo Jae-sung (유재성), acting commissioner general of the National Police Agency, said, "AI is a partner that protects the safety of the public together." He added, "We will strengthen cooperation with relevant institutions to create an opportunity for science policing to change real sites."
