The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee is moving to devise a national AI computing strategy in response to the spread of agentic AI.

The National AI Strategy Committee said on July 20 it held a seminar titled "National AI computing strategy in the age of agentic AI" at Seoul Square.

Agentic AI goes beyond simple question-and-answer tasks. It is a technology that sets plans on its own and performs complex work by linking multiple functions. As its use expands across industry and public services, the importance of the computing infrastructure and operating system that support it is also growing.

The seminar was arranged to discuss computing strategy and policy directions to support three mega-projects the government announced in June: AI semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centres.

Lee Dong-soo (이동수), a subcommittee member for technological innovation and infrastructure at the National AI Strategy Committee, presented on changes in the computing environment and policy implications stemming from the spread of agentic AI. Participants then discussed optimising compute and memory resources at AI data centres, cooperative operating structures for multiple AI agents, development directions for AI semiconductors and data centres, and technical tasks to reduce the cost and processing time of AI services.

Subcommittee members assessed that expanding graphics processing unit (GPU) scale alone would make it difficult to secure national AI competitiveness. They said capabilities are needed to integrate AI semiconductors and memory, data centres, software and operating systems, and to allocate computing resources to match service characteristics.

They also agreed that the three mega-projects, including AI semiconductors, AI data centres and physical AI, should be linked as a single AI ecosystem rather than treated as separate projects.

The committee plans to review national computing demand and changes in the industrial ecosystem, based on the discussions at the seminar, and to identify mid- to long-term policy tasks.

Shin Jin-woo (신진우), chair of the technological innovation and infrastructure subcommittee, said, "We will promptly prepare a national AI computing strategy that organically links the three mega-projects."
