Samsung Display set a new benchmark in the high-brightness race for laptop displays. Samsung Display said on Sunday it will begin full-scale supply of tandem OLED panels for laptops that meet DisplayHDR True Black 1400, the top brightness grade newly established this month by display industry standards body VESA.

True Black 1400 certification requires peak brightness of 1,400 nits at 10 percent OPR, while keeping black levels at 0.0005 nits or lower. The standard raises the brightness requirement by 40 percent from True Black 1000, the previous top grade. Samsung Display's panel delivers up to 1,600 nits at the panel level, the highest brightness among commercialised laptop OLEDs.

The panel uses a tandem OLED structure with two stacked organic light-emitting layers. Because the stacked layers emit light together, it can deliver higher brightness with the same current. At the same brightness, the load on each layer falls, extending lifespan. In typical laptop-use brightness conditions, the lifespan of tandem OLED is more than twice that of OLEDs with a single emitting layer structure, the company said.

Samsung Display is supplying the panel to global PC makers. Lenovo's Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition 11th generation obtained True Black 1400 certification on July 8. Asus, Dell Technologies and MSI plan to sequentially unveil True Black 1400-supported products using Samsung Display panels from the second half of this year through next year.

Jung Yong-wook (정용욱), head of Samsung Display's IT strategy marketing team and a managing director, said, "The high-performance laptop OLED that meets the True Black 1400 standard is a representative product that proves Samsung Display's advanced materials technology." He added, "We will continue to expand our high-performance OLED lineup so we can provide a differentiated product experience in the premium laptop market."

Samsung Display plans to exhibit the panel at the K-Display 2026 Korea Display Industry Exhibition, to be held at COEX in Seoul from July 22 to 24.
