Google has changed the brand name of its AI-based research tool NotebookLM to "Gemini Notebook" and added a code execution feature for data analysis.

TechCrunch reported on Wednesday that the revamp is part of a move to consolidate AI products released under separate names at the experimental stage under the Gemini brand.

NotebookLM was first unveiled as "Project Tailwind" at Google I/O in 2023. It has since grown into a service used by 30 million users and more than 600,000 organisations.

Google has added features to NotebookLM including interactive podcast creation, video summaries, broader file format support and enterprise pricing plans. After NotebookLM spread, other companies and startups also introduced podcast creation based on source materials and research tool functions.

With the update, each notebook operates as an individual secure container. Users can generate code to make outputs more interactive, and can also perform complex data analysis using multiple sources directly within the tool.

The feature is available to subscribers to Google AI Ultra paid plans and to Workspace Business customers using AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Pro users will be able to use the feature in the coming weeks.

Users can already view their notebooks in the Gemini app. Google plans to soon support access to notebooks in Search AI Mode as well.
