[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] SpaceX has started selling Starlink's new home antenna, "Starlink V5," in some regions. The main changes are a smaller size and lighter weight than the V4, along with improved power efficiency.

The Verge reported on Tuesday that Starlink V5 is the latest antenna aimed at residential users. SpaceX is supplying it only in some regions for now, and plans to widen sales areas as it expands production to meet global demand. It did not disclose when supply will increase or which regions will be covered.

The core change is lighter hardware. V5 is noticeably smaller and lighter than V4. SpaceX said it has also improved power efficiency. As ease of installation and power use are tangible factors for home internet equipment, the update is seen as placing more weight on availability and operating efficiency than on a performance race.

Its use is limited, however. SpaceX said Starlink V5 is "not a product for use while moving." Users who want to use it in vehicles or other mobile settings will have to wait for the revamped Starlink Mini that was announced alongside V5 last month.

There are also points that differ from expectations on performance figures. The Verge's comparison of specifications showed actual speeds vary depending on the subscribed service plan, time of day, network capacity and regional congestion. SpaceX also said, "Actual speeds are not guaranteed."

It was also confirmed that V5 posts a slightly lower figure than V4 for maximum download speed. Absolute perceived performance can vary by environment, but on maximum speed alone, some users may find it disappointing. The Verge also noted that "users may not welcome the slightly lower maximum download speed."

The launch has made Starlink's equipment lineup more clearly divided by use. V5 is positioned as fixed home-installation equipment, while Starlink Mini is aimed at mobility. SpaceX is continuing a trend of segmenting products by use scenario while adjusting antenna size, weight and power efficiency.

Separately, SpaceX disclosed the full detailed specifications for V5. But service quality that users actually experience is influenced not only by the hardware itself but also by plan and local network conditions. As a result, the V5 launch can be seen as more than simply adding a new product, and as an example of Starlink shifting its equipment design toward lighter, more efficient hardware while strengthening product distinctions by usage environment.
