A claim has emerged that about 416,000 users suffered another personal data leak after using Tving vouchers received as compensation for a KT hacking incident.

Data submitted by Democratic Party lawmaker Jeong-heon Lee (이정헌) from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Personal Information Protection Commission showed about 586,000 customers chose Tving vouchers in a customer rewards programme offered by KT early this year.

Lee's office said personal data of about 416,000 people who registered the vouchers and actually used Tving were included among those affected by the latest leak.

Damage was also confirmed among members who did not sign up directly to Tving and used simple login functions such as Naver and Kakao. During the linking process, identity verification information such as names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers sent to and stored by Tving was found to have leaked together with account IDs.

Some also analyse that the scale of damage via KT is small, given that the overall number of Tving personal data leak victims is estimated at 19 million. KT is known not to have directly provided customers' personal data to Tving.

Lee pointed out that even if a company is not the direct party responsible for a personal data leak, a business that provides affiliated services in compensation for victims or as part of a linkage cannot be free of at least a duty to notify and a responsibility to protect customers.
