South Korea’s national domain registrations have returned to above 1.1 million.

The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) said on Monday that as of end-June 2026 the number of South Korea national domain registrations stood at 1,101,000.

A national domain is a top-level domain used on the internet to identify a country or region. Under relevant laws, KISA manages the national domains “.kr” and “.한국”.

National domain registrations rose rapidly after general registration began in April 2007 for the English second-level domain “English.kr”, and first exceeded 1 million in 2008. In 2018, supported by a discount promotion for Korean-language domains, registrations hit an all-time high of 1,602,000, but then declined.

Registrations turned back to growth from 2025. Four types of third-level domains launched last year, including “ai.kr”, “io.kr”, “it.kr” and “me.kr”, recorded 14,000 registrations by the end of June this year.

KISA improved user inconveniences based on its own customer satisfaction survey and consultations received by the 118 call centre. It raised service quality by imposing sanctions such as corrective demands and business suspensions on registrars that repeatedly generated complaints.

Helped by the introduction of new domains and improvements to user services, national domain registrations increased by about 15,000 in 2025 and by about 18,000 in the first half of this year.

There are currently 15 registrars that handle national domain registration on behalf of users. To protect users’ right to know and right to choose, KISA provides a comparison table of fees and additional services by registrar on the Korea Internet Information Center website.

KISA President Sang-jung Lee (이상중) said, “Through stable management and user-focused system improvements, we will raise the public value of national domains and provide services trusted by the public.”
