Naver is rolling out a “real-time walking directions” service that lets users find their destinations through voice guidance without looking at their smartphone screens. It also added rear speed camera alerts and an incident reporting feature to its in-car navigation to improve travel convenience.

Naver said on Thursday it officially launched its real-time walking directions service and upgraded its in-car navigation features to support more convenient and safer travel for Naver Map users.

The most noticeable change is the real-time walking directions service. It adds real-time voice guidance to the existing “walk-along” feature, allowing pedestrians to get their bearings easily on unfamiliar streets using only earphone audio. The service is being applied first on Android, with a phased rollout planned for iOS.

Integration with public transport route guidance has also become smoother. It covers the entire route from the starting point to public transport boarding and alighting points and the final destination. Information on the next bus or subway line and its expected arrival time is also displayed on the screen. When entering an “indoor AR navigation” section applied to COEX last year, it switches naturally to that mode to support uninterrupted travel.

The in-car navigation function has also become more refined. Naver revamped the user interface (UI) and added a “report” icon on the screen so drivers can easily share road conditions while driving. This allows real-time sharing of unexpected situations on the road such as accidents, construction and controls, preventing secondary damage to other drivers and helping safe driving.

As enforcement methods evolve, Naver upgraded the system so users can also receive real-time guidance on rear-section speed cameras and rear real-time variable speed enforcement cameras. In a safe driving mode that operates without setting a destination, users can also check real-time traffic light information.

Jung Kyung-hwa (정경화), head leader of Naver’s map service, said Naver Map, as an all-in-one platform that supports users throughout their journeys, has made more refined travel possible through this update by strengthening linkages between walking and public transport. She said the company will continue upgrades across the service so more than 31,000,000 monthly users can travel more conveniently and safely to the last mile.
