[Digital Today reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] Apple on June 8 (local time) unveiled iOS 27, a new iPhone operating system focused on performance, design improvements and stronger AI features, at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026.
Foreign media including The Verge reported that iOS 27 supports devices up to the iPhone 11. The most notable change is the addition of a Liquid Glass transparency slider. Liquid Glass is a semi-transparent, glass-like design introduced from iOS 26 that has been criticised since launch for readability issues.
In iOS 27, users can directly adjust the transparency of elements with glass effects, including the tab bar.
Next-generation Apple Intelligence features will also be included. Apple announced an AI-based Siri at WWDC 2024, but in March 2025 it delayed the release, saying it was taking longer than expected.
A "Siri Mode" has been added to the Camera app. It recognises objects in the viewfinder and provides related information.
Apple also announced macOS Golden Gate 27, its next-generation desktop operating system.
According to the agency, Golden Gate 27 adds a slider to adjust the opacity of the Liquid Glass UI effect and slightly reduces the corner radius of windows to increase a sense of consistency across the screen.
macOS Golden Gate 27 will also include a large number of AI features. It integrates Siri into Spotlight, the system-wide search function, allowing users to ask questions directly in the search bar or select a file and ask about related content.
macOS Golden Gate 27 also includes several cross-platform features announced at this WWDC, including parental controls and Screen Time updates.
The Safari browser adds an AI-based tab management feature that groups open webpages by topic. "Notify Me" alerts users to changes on a webpage, and leaked passwords can be updated automatically. It also provides a feature that can create extensions when described in natural language.
Core apps have also been redesigned. Messages recommends photos to share based on a conversation, and the Phone app shows related information such as a flight verification code when a call begins. Mail strengthens its recommendation features, and users can add events to the calendar using only a description.
The Home app generates descriptions of camera footage and supports stitching together footage from multiple cameras using AI.
