Snowflake and business metrics software startup AtScale will develop a joint product that links with Microsoft Power BI and Excel.

The two companies said they will soon offer a preview of the jointly developed product through Snowflake Summit 26, Snowflake's annual conference being held in San Francisco.

AtScale CEO Chris Lynch (크리스 린치) stressed that Snowflake customers can define business metrics with AtScale software and use them directly in Power BI and Excel.

Currently, for Snowflake customers to use Microsoft software, they need to copy data separately and follow Microsoft's metric method.

The Information viewed the companies' collaboration as taking into account competition over the semantic layer, a software layer that lets companies define consistent business metrics from data.

Microsoft recently blocked links between Power BI and business metrics from partners such as Databricks. The stated reason was stability concerns, but the industry saw it as a move mindful of competition, The Information reported. Snowflake's strategy is to offer, through its partnership with AtScale, an alternative that allows customers to avoid such problems.
