Naver Pay (Npay) is joining hands with the Macao Government Tourism Office to boost overseas QR payments. It will also release a brand film that combines travel in Macao with a simple payment experience, featuring singer and actor Jin-young Park (박진영), who has gained global popularity.

Naver Pay said on Thursday it will present a brand film created in collaboration with the Macao Government Tourism Office to promote Macao tourism and overseas QR payments.

According to the company, Npay overseas QR payment volume in China in January to April rose about 70 percent from the same period a year earlier. Payments in Hong Kong and Macao also increased about 52 percent over the same period.

In particular, it said QR payment acceptance in Macao is expanding across everyday spending venues for travelers, including restaurants, cafes and select shops.

The brand film was produced in 3 episodes. It shows Park traveling in Macao and using Npay overseas QR payments without separate currency exchange.

Naver Pay and the Macao Government Tourism Office plan to expand various collaborations, including payment promotions for travelers, starting with the release of the brand film.

An instant discount promotion is currently under way at UnionPay merchants in Macao through Aug. 30. In the first week of the promotion, the payment amount and number of transactions rose 72 percent and 46 percent, respectively, from the previous week. New users who used overseas QR payments in Macao for the first time also increased 25 percent.

From June 1, the promotion will be expanded to Hong Kong. It will offer a 10 percent instant discount for payments of 200 Hong Kong dollars or more in Hong Kong and 200 Macao patacas or more in Macao at UnionPay merchants. It applies up to 2 times per day in each location and up to 5 times during the period, for a total of 10 times.

In China, it will also offer a 10 percent instant discount for payments of 30 yuan or more at UnionPay merchants from June 1 to Oct. 31. The maximum discount per transaction is 35 yuan, and it applies up to 2 times per day.
